I used to love sharpening knives by hand on diamond stones—fast, effective, and satisfying—until the results became maddeningly inconsistent. One stroke the edge was perfect, the next it was dub-edged or rounded because the blade tipped even a fraction of a degree. Freehand felt like gambling with my best blades.

Then I tried the popular rolling sharpeners. At first they seemed like the answer, but the honeymoon ended fast: blades rotated unpredictably in the clamp, proprietary discs wore out and cost a fortune to replace, and the little internal bearings seized after a few months of real use. I was tired of fragile gadgets that forced me to buy their ecosystem just to keep my knives sharp.

So I built exactly what I wanted: a dead-simple, bombproof jig that holds any knife perfectly parallel with a spine guide, locks it with powerful bar magnets so nothing moves, and lets me keep using the diamond plates I already own and trust.
